Sweater Savvy
New ways to wear a classic
It’s that time of year again: falling leaves,
new beginnings and the perfect season to pull out those dusty boxes
and start showing off your cool weather apparel. But don’t leave
the past season completely behind – check out our sweater style
guide to capture the best of autumn with a dollop of summer sun.
The Turtleneck
You don’t have to be an East Coast girl to dig this simple,
yet classic piece. On its own, it may not be a knockout, but add in
a little fun and you’ll be the toast of the party. Fall calls
for two varieties: cotton ribbed and merino wool.
A ribbed turtleneck looks great under a corduroy
jumper, sleeveless velvet dress or with a ruffly skirt. Slip on a
leather jacket or a vintage blazer and you’re sure to steal
the show. Worried your look is too stuffy? Add soft, folksy touches
like a vintage flower pin or a pretty scarf over your shoulders.
When it comes to wool turtlenecks, look for those
made out of lambs wool or a merino wool blend. Choose one in classic
black or a neutral color like cream (rather than white) to complement
South Asian undertones. For a look that combines brains and beauty,
try a wool turtleneck with a tartan skirt and calf boots or simple
flats. |
| Fitted Jackets and Cardigans
Doll up jeans or long, swishy skirts with fitted jackets that end
at the base of your rib cage or sit slightly above the waist. As an
added bonus, they’re a great way to stretch out the summer;
a fitted cardigan or jacket adds fall mileage to a summery, feminine
cotton tunic. To avoid looking homely or worse, sloppy, – make
sure they hug your curves to keep your look sleek and urban.
This fall, check out jackets in corduroy with oversize buttons or
consider a crocheted sweater with a delicate lace design. Even a denim
jacket that hits your waist looks city-chic with a flowy tunic and
gypsy skirt. Add a couple warm weather accessories like patterned
black tights or a bright knit scarf to bring out the best of the season.
Roomy Knits
Remember those cozy, just warm enough sweaters you grabbed for your
late summer moonlit walks? Well, you can wear them well into autumn,
too! The key to wearing these pieces is working in chiffon or other
delicate fabrics to look modern, not matronly. Adding a pair of sleek
jeans is an easy way to offset a roomy sweater. Try a slightly oversize
pullover with a lacy vintage dress and you’ll be sleek, not
summery. If you’re headed to school this fall, jeans are probably
a staple, so try a cable knit sweater with knee high boots to keep
you warm as well as hip. Add hoop earrings and you’re ready
to hit the books in style. Look for cotton knits in earthy shades
like chocolate, rust and heather gray. And don’t worry, black
is always an option!
