Letter from the Editor

Dear ABCDlady Readers,

What made us or our families decide to leave everything behind to immigrate to North America? This month, we reflect on our families’ move to America and on the lives of South Asians abroad. First, we bring you an interview with an award-winning journalist and professor, Sandeep Junnarkar, who has given voice to the millions in India suffering from HIV through his multimedia website. Only South Africa surpasses India for having the highest number of people living with the disease. That problem is now exacerbated by a new Indian law that prohibits the production of generic versions of drugs with global patents, including drugs used to treat HIV and AIDS.

Our January issue also features a status update on the tsunami-hit areas and efforts to rebuild in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu, one year after the killer tidal wave devastated the coast of Southern Asia.

Next, we tell the stories of South Asian women who arrive in America on H-4 visas, which are issued to dependents and do not allow individuals to work. The result is an influx of highly-educated women who are unable to join the American workforce. Along the same lines, we bring you an article that discusses the pros and cons of the journey westward. What did our families gain and lose?

We also have a useful article for parents bringing up their children in America. Our parents tended to coddle us, making us loving, interconnected with our families and giving us the ability to work well in groups. However, it also made us less autonomous. How can we raise our children to be independent yet connected to us? Click here to find out.

Our Love and Sex expert suggests ways to talk to your sibling about sex when the subject is taboo in your family, and discusses how those with multiple sclerosis can maintain healthy sexual relationships.

To mark the beginning of 2006, we’ll help you with your New Year’s resolutions. A doctor provides advice on how to eat South Asian food the healthy way, our Desi Diva gives you some insightful beauty basics for the new year and we discuss how to transform your goals into reality.

Enjoy!

Sincerely,

Navdeep Kathuria
