Letter from the Editor

Dear ABCDlady Readers,

It’s the first Monday of February, and this month ABCDlady presents stories about people in different stages of life. We first bring you a controversy stirred up in California by inaccurate descriptions of Hinduism in school textbooks. For example, Hindus are often referred to as “cow worshippers” in the books our children read at school. Find out what the citizens of California and now people from all over the world are trying to do about it.

We visit the college days of eating pizza and ramen noodles and provide some simple South Asian recipes to bring your family’s home cooking to your apartment. Continuing with the college theme, we show you how South Asian students are rediscovering their culture through dance at PhillyFest 2006, an intercollegiate cultural dance competition that took place at the University of Pennsylvania.

Next we hit the bar scene for a night out on the town. Have you ever experienced racism at a bar or another social setting? One of our writers did—learn about her discovery that racism isn’t always blatant.

Hopping to the business world, we meet entrepreneur Dolly Oberoi, CEO of C² Technologies, Inc., who was selected by Washington Business Journal for a “Women Who Mean Business” award. Ms. Oberoi manages to win multi-million dollar contracts while still having a family and staying involved with her community. Click here to find out her secret.

Next we drop in on South Asians with young children. If we were confused about our identities while we were growing up, how can we raise more confident bicultural children? Our parenting expert provides advice on how to raise your children to be comfortable with South Asian culture, yet still at ease with their American identities.

On the other end of the spectrum, our parents are getting older and we need to begin thinking about how we will care for them when they get too old to care for themselves. We provide guidance on the long-term care of our elderly parents. It’s not too early to begin thinking about giving back to the parents who gave us so much.

Moving on, our Love and Sex expert provides advice to someone emotionally scarred by an abortion and to a woman trying to alleviate the performance anxiety experienced by her boyfriend.

And finally, our Desi Diva provides a guide on how to stay warm yet fashionable in the declining temperatures.

Enjoy!

Sincerely,

Navdeep Kathuria
