Dear ABCDlady Readers,

This month at ABCDlady we have an assortment of articles to inform and entertain. Look out for a new section in the upcoming months! Our “Eye on Events” section offers an event planner’s advice on preparing for important occasions and other special events.

- This month we discuss the art of a cocktail party and offer some unique decorating and planning tips that will be sure to get you recognized as the ultimate party-thrower.

- The DesiQ Conference, a conference for South Asians who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, inter-sex, or queer (LGBTIQ), just took place at the end of June. We learn about the issues that arose during the conference and discuss what it means to be gay in our community in this day and age. In addition, we discuss how our immigration laws affect LGBTIQ South Asians and what some organizations are trying to do about it.

- Ever feel frustrated that South Asians seem to only want to hang out with each other? One reader did. We answer her question about why South Asians flock together.

- We also meet one of the youngest female, South Asian faces on national television news today—Zain Verjee. Kenyan-born Verjee has Wolf Blitzer singing her praises. Learn about how she climbed the television news ladder to cover domestic and international news stories for CNN’s The Situation Room.

- On a lighter note, we bring you an essay on the dos and don’ts of the Desi dating scene. This is one you’re going to want to print out and post on your refrigerator for a quick laugh each morning.

- Television can have a strong influence on children at a very young age by affecting their reading habits, sports activities and even their opinions on sex, violence, tobacco, alcohol and drugs. Our Parenting Expert discusses television’s impact on children and includes recommendations for positive ways to enjoy television together.

- Our Cocktails and Cuisine writer provides some hearty and satisfying recipes for our vegetarian readers.

- Our Love and Sex expert answers questions on recovering from a breakup and getting involved with a married man.

- And just in time for the heat wave, our Desi Diva dishes some useful tips on looking cool, when it’s hot out.

ABCDlady is also proud to announce that we are an award-winning publication. We recently won an award from the South Asian Journalist Assocation (SAJA) for our profile of a taxi cab driver. Congratulations to Rohina Phadnis and Devika Koppikar, the writer and editor respectively.
