Letter from the Editor

Dear ABCDlady Readers,

It seems like this year is flying by! It is the first Monday of the month, and we have yet another outstanding ABCDlady issue for you. This month we talk about careers, relationships and…Salman Rushdie.

Want to pursue that career in journalism, interior design or education but worried that this will not meet your parents’ expectations? We hear from Avneet, who struggled with the same worries before pursuing graduate school in English. Taking a different career route, we introduce you to the world’s youngest physician, Dr. Balamurali Ambati. A real-life Doogie Howser, Ambati graduated from college at age 13 and became a physician by 17. Learn the secrets to this 29-year old’s success.

This month we also speak to ABCDs worried about taking their relationships to a different level. First we talk to a girl who doesn’t want the destructive marriage her parents have, followed by someone who wants to take her relationship further but has to deal with a boyfriend who is content with the status quo.

Engaged and already overwhelmed with fears about the wedding planning? We discuss what you need to know to begin planning the big day. Next, we speak to the moms out there who need a little time to rejuvenate! We provide some suggestions on activities in which you can engage without the kids, so you are your best self when returning to little Simi and Neetu.

Salman Rushdie is perhaps most known for the Satanic Verses controversy, when he caused a huge stir in the Muslim world because it perceived that his 1988 novel, Satanic Verses, contained an irreverent depiction of Prophet Muhammad. After Iranian Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini declared a fatwa, calling for Rushdie’s execution, Rushdie was forced into hiding for many years. Has Rushdie overcome the fundamentalist Islamic public’s hateful memories of him and his book? We decided to conduct an experiment about this very topic in modern-day Iran. Read about the Rushdie Experiment, a story that our correspondent nearly got arrested for pursuing.

And finally, we bring you some articles to prep you for the winter season. Does that winter coat in your closet look a little worn? Our Desi Diva dishes out the latest styles for those looking to make a coat upgrade. We also expect that your diet may face some bumps in the road with the holiday season approaching. Our Cuisine Expert discusses how you can remain true to your diet and gives you some healthy recipes for those holiday get-togethers.

Stay warm!

Sincerely,

Navdeep Kathuria
