Letter from the Editor

Dear ABCDlady Readers,

Regardless of whether or not you observe Christmas, the holiday season can be a stressful time. Between extra traffic surrounding the malls, various holiday get-togethers and the start of the flu season, you might easily be overwhelmed by it all. This month, ABCDlady brings you articles that will help you embrace and enjoy the season.

First, we have a feature on managing stress for the holiday season and beyond. South Asian women tend to work, work and work without giving themselves a break. Our amount of activity always seems to increase over the holidays. This month, we provide tips on managing stress in a healthy way.

With the onset of winter, we have shorter days with less sunlight. Add in visits with family, pressure to find the right presents and end-of-the year reflection, and you might start feeling sad during the holidays. Learn more about differentiating between feeling blue and having depression—a real mental illness often overlooked by South Asians—and learn how to shake off those winter blues.

As parents, we want to make sure our children understand the true spirit of giving to others and creating traditions, rather than merely getting caught up with the latest toys and gadgets over the holidays. This month, we discuss how to celebrate the holidays with our children.

For those who are attending a holiday party or two, our Desi Diva gives you the insider scoop on what to wear and what not to wear! With the flu season upon us, our Cuisine expert provides some natural home remedies. And for the newly-engaged, we provide some valuable information on selecting a venue. Stay tuned for other important tips from our resident event planner in our series on wedding planning.

Next, we meet Mousumi Shaw, a young South Asian woman who took a chance at becoming a jewelry designer and is now a success story. For those of you who are afraid to take the plunge into your own business, be sure to read her inspiring story.

Our Love and Sex expert encounters someone worried about becoming a real-life 40-year old virgin and a woman worrying that her fiancé isn’t being truthful with her.

And we meet another type of ABCD…an American Born Catholic Desi! Read about her experiences growing up with other South Asians in a predominately Caucasian neighborhood.

Sincerely,

Navdeep Kathuria
