Letter from the Editor

Dear ABCDlady Readers,

This month, we honor our moms and feature South Asian individuals going through life-changing events.

- Do you realize that Mother’s Day is less than a week away? We let you in on what to get for the mom who already has everything. From planning a thoughtful brunch to unique gift-giving ideas, we’ll have you prepared this May 14th.

- Are you about to become a mom, for the first time? This month, our Parenting expert preps you for what you’re about to experience. All the books and magazines written on the subject do not address what the South Asian mom experiences…from the hoards of relatives who will insist on visiting right after the birth, to nani’s (grandmother) well-intentioned advice!

- After delivering a child, some moms experience postpartum depression, which can occur as a result of hormonal changes after birth, combined with stresses such as sleeplessness, a challenging baby and coping with your identity. Learn about one woman’s experience with this serious medical condition.

- We also feature the film Amu, based on director Shonali Bose’s bond with her own mother and Bose’s personal experience with the brutality against Sikhs that followed the 1984 killing of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The story of making the film could have been a movie in its own right! ABCDlady goes behind the scenes and learns about Bose’s struggles with filming in India and finding funding, given the controversial nature of her script. Read how Bose and the film have persevered despite so many complications.

We also meet Piya, who went from sipping whiskey and sodas and taking the subway home to her cozy Brooklyn apartment to quitting her job and moving to India to live with her grandmother. Read about her recollections, expectations and hopes for her time in India.

Engaged but can’t stand that rock on your finger? Our Love and Sex experts meet a woman who is a little bit unhappy with her engagement ring and a man worried about an STI he may have caught.

With summer approaching, our Desi Diva dives into the fashion pool with advice on the best looks for floral prints and pastels that look good with the South Asian skin tone.

And finally, our Cuisine expert introduces us to the rich cuisine influenced by the Mughal rule in South Asia.

Enjoy!

Sincerely,

Navdeep Kathuria
