Satisfying your Daily Fruit Requirements with Smoothies

As a busy professional, it’s difficult to ensure that you have a balanced diet. This month, we focus on one type of food that is easy to overlook—fruit! If you take a look at MyPyramid, the most recent health guide the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has put out regarding servings and exercise, you will see that you are supposed to eat two cups of fruit each day. I have found that a fun way to make sure you get your fruit servings while staying well-hydrated in the summer and having fun in the kitchen is to experiment with smoothies.

Here are a few fruit smoothie recipes, just in time for the summer months! These recipes are meant for one person, but they will have you refilling your glass! The larger amount allows you to get all the fruit you need. Plus, the smoothie will be so good that you’ll want to go back for more!

Strawberry-Banana Smoothie
Makes 2 ½ cups

This smoothie is a refreshing summer drink, perfect after a long evening stuck in traffic!

Ingredients:
1 cup of strawberries
1 banana
2/3 cup orange juice
5 cubes of ice

Instructions:
1. Cut off the stems of the strawberries.

2. Remove banana from peel.

3. Combine ice, strawberries, banana and orange juice (in that order) in a blender.

4. Blend well.

Tip: For variety, after blending, try adding a few remaining strawberries and only blend a little more so there are small pieces of strawberry in your smoothie. The whole pieces of strawberry make for a delicious surprise inside the smoothie!

Thick Mango Smoothie
Makes 2 cups

Let’s face it—South Asians love mangoes. Here is a delightful mango drink that will take you back to India.

Ingredients:
1 mango
½ cup blackberries
1 cup mango juice
1 cup orange juice
4 cubes of ice

Instructions:

1. Remove the skin from the mango and discard the seed.

2. Combine ice, mango, blackberries, mango juice and orange juice (in that order) into a blender.

3. Blend well.

Strawberry-Orange-Mango Delight
Makes 3 cups

A rule of thumb for coming up with a well-flavored smoothie is to check out the fruit drinks at your grocery store. If you see flavors paired together in a fruit drink, they’ll probably make a good set of fruits to combine for your smoothie too. The Strawberry-Orange-Mango Delight proves my theory.

Ingredients:
2 cups of strawberries
1 cup orange juice
1 cup mango juice
2 ice cubes

Instructions:
1. Cut off the stems of the strawberries.

2. Remove the skin from the mango and discard the seed.

3. Combine ice, strawberries, orange juice and mango juice (in that order) in a blender.

4. Blend well.
