Letter from the Editor

Dear ABCDlady Readers,

As South Asians we tend to be overachievers. Many of us work on weekends, take on more than we can handle and try to be everything to everyone. So, this month at ABCDlady, we decided to take things down a notch and keep our issue light.

Have you seen Vanaja yet? The film has won countless awards at film festivals around the world and has even earned a four-star rating from film critic Roger Ebert. This month, we talk to the star of the film, Mamatha Bhukya. Learn about Bhukya's story from being hand-picked from her eighth grade class in India to learning acting and dancing on the job!

Are saris disappearing in India? Just as the fashionable icon seems to be sweeping North America, many clothing shops in India are no longer readily selling them. In a first person essay, Alika explores the trend. Read about her recent experiences with wearing a sari in India.

Continuing with the fashion theme, our Desi Diva provides the latest scoop on the accessories that are "in" this fall, from shoes, purses, belts and everything in between.

As we watch our parents get older, it's a great reminder for us to take care of our own health. This month we discuss healthy eating for diabetes prevention, delve into how early one should begin seeing a gynecologist and explore some women's experiences with sadness or depression after the birth of their children.

For the event planners among us, we give you tips on the ABCs of planning a baby shower. And, for those who want to serve Indian appetizers at their next party, we provide recipes for pakoras, chaat and mini pooris.

And finally, our Love and Sex expert chats with someone who is frustrated with her boyfriend's frugality. So relax, take a load off and enjoy this month’s issue!

Sincerely,

Navdeep Kathuria
