Letter from the Editor

Dear ABCDlady Readers,

I’m not sure if you’re aware of this, but every member of the ABCDlady team also has a full-time job. We have been so fortunate that our team members have contributed their talents on a volunteer basis while fulfilling their other countless obligations. ABCDlady has been your voice for four years. Of all the South Asian publications, we are the flagship magazine that has consistently brought stories that make readers proud of BOTH their South Asian and American backgrounds. We are grateful for our entire staff of writers, editors, photographers, models and copy editors, who give us their talents and time, and most of all, who reveal their stories to instill and enhance pride in our dual heritage.

However, as times are tough, we are facing challenges in the road ahead. For that reason, we wish to seek your help keeping our forum alive. We would like to request for you to donate $5 to help cover our basic costs for hosting, marketing and production. We thank you for any support you can provide and look forward to keeping our forum for Desis open for many years. Please donate to our cause, and then come back to read the rest of this month’s issue!

You can donate with a Paypal account or with your credit card by clicking on the icon to the right. Thank you so much!!

Okay, that’s all I have about our membership drive. Let’s chat about what we have in store for this month! It’s election time, and accordingly, we have two interesting articles on the topic. First, we meet Gautam, a recent naturalized U.S. citizen. This election is significant for him for a unique reason: He got to vote for the first time in the U.S.! Read about his perspective on voting and the elections. Also, our Love and Sex Expert meets someone who is having a little trouble with her recent discovery about the political views of the person she is dating.

For many of us, the holiday season approaching means a large gathering with every family member in the tri-state area. And then there are the problems Desis often face: the unmarried get harassed about getting married; newlyweds are hassled about having children; and general chaos ensues because there are more guests than can be comfortably accommodated. This month, we chat about how to handle family conflict over the holidays.

If you get time to sneak in a movie with your family, Slumdog Millionaire is a must-see. This Fox Searchlight Pictures movie is already generating Oscar buzz. This month we meet Dev Patel, newcomer and star of the award-winning film.

If spending time with your family brings a few grays to your hair or if you simply want a change, we have a special article on coloring your hair. Not only does this article delve into the ins and outs of coloring your hair, it also discusses the specific precautions we Desis should take because of our hair color. In addition, it tells you what you need to know if you’ve used henna to color your hair. Read on to learn more!

Trying to add some more green to your diet? Our Cuisine expert is too, and she has some excellent recipes this month for Alu-Methi (Potato curry with fenugreek leaves) and Gujarati Spinach Dal (Lentil Soup).

For the parents out there who are still trying to get their children to embrace South Asian food, our parenting expert provides some creative ideas to introduce South Asian flavors to picky children. If your child is the type who refuses to eat anything but Mac-n-Cheese and pizza, this article is for you!

Finally, for our Health and Wellness feature, we discuss breast cancer—the detection and treatment.

If you haven’t yet donated to ABCDlady’s fundraiser, click here to do so! Thanks!

Sincerely,

Navdeep Kathuria
