Cocktails and Cuisine

Movie Night

After the Oscar excitement during the past few months, the buzz about the winners and losers has finally died down. Although going to the theater and watching a Hollywood blockbuster can be fun and entertaining, it can also get expensive. Depending on where you live, the price of a movie ticket can be pretty steep—it’s about $10 in Chicago. That’s not including snacks like popcorn, candy and soda. And if the movie you decide to see isn’t as good as you hoped, the night can leave you disappointed and out a pretty penny.

A fun – and more economical – alternative is to hold Movie Night in the comfort of your own home. You can customize the night by watching new movies or old favorites, inviting several friends or enjoying the evening alone with your significant other. You can also prepare snacks your way. There are always a few movies I never tire of watching. Some of my favorites include Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles, Cocktail, Little Miss Sunshine and The Devil Wears Prada.

Another great thing about having movie night at home is that you can make snacks that aren’t available at a typical movie theater. Movie theater popcorn is heavy on the butter and salt. Try making masala (spice) popcorn with less butter and salt but with loads of flavor. Also, sweet potato fries are a tastier and healthier alternative to regular fries. Paired with a creamy dip, these fries can be a great appetizer or side dish.

Masala (Spice) Popcorn
Serves 2

Masala is a term used to describe a mixture of spices. Give boring popcorn a spicy kick by adding South Asian flavors.

Ingredients
1 bag microwave popcorn without butter (any brand will work)
1 tablespoon butter
½ teaspoon ground cumin
¼ teaspoon red chili powder
¼ teaspoon garlic powder
¼ teaspoon aamchur powder (dried mango powder, available at South Asian markets)
½ - 1 teaspoon sugar
¼ - ½ cup roasted and salted peanuts (optional)

Instructions
1. Prepare the popcorn in the microwave as instructed.

2. Pour the popcorn into a large bowl.

3. In a small saucepan, melt the butter.

4. Add the spices (ground cumin, red chili powder, garlic powder, aamchur powder and sugar) to the butter and stir to combine.

5. When the butter is completely melted and has combined with the spices, pour the mixture over the prepared popcorn and mix to coat well.

6. Add peanuts and serve.

Tips:
- If you use salted butter, you may not need to add any additional salt. You can adjust the amount of salt according to your taste.
- To add a kick of spice, increase the amount of red chili powder.
- Any variety of nuts can be used.
- Dried cranberries or raisins can be added.

Sweet Potato Fries with Creamy Dipping Sauce
Serves 2

Recently, “superfoods” have been in the news. Superfoods are foods with a high nutrient content and great health benefits. Sweet potatoes have been described as a superfood because they are high in carotenoids, vitamin C, potassium and fiber. By baking sweet potatoes until they are crispy, these fries will taste great—and you’ll want to make them often.

Ingredients for Sweet Potato Fries
2 medium sweet potatoes, washed and scrubbed clean
1 teaspoon ground cumin
½ teaspoon coarsely ground coriander seeds
½ teaspoon garlic powder
¼ teaspoon red chili powder
1 – 1 ½ teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon brown sugar
2 tablespoons olive oil

Instructions for Sweet Potato Fries
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

2. Slice sweet potatoes into french-fry-sized wedges and place in a large mixing bowl.

3. Add spices, salt and brown sugar.

4. Toss to combine.

5. Pour olive oil over the wedges and mix well.

6. Spread the wedges on a baking sheet in one layer.

7. Bake for 30 minutes (turn fries over after 15 minutes so they bake evenly) until crisp and golden brown.

8. Remove from oven. Serve hot with dipping sauce.

Ingredients for Dipping Sauce
¼ cup lowfat sour cream
1 ½ tablespoons light mayonnaise
1 small clove garlic, grated
1 teaspoon tomato ketchup
1 ½ teaspoon Sriracha sauce (also known as Rooster sauce, available in the Asian section at most grocery stores)

Instructions for Dipping Sauce
1. Combine sour cream and mayonnaise in a bowl.

2. Add grated garlic and mix well.

3. Add ketchup and Sriracha sauce. Mix well.

4. Serve with sweet potato fries.

Tips:
- To increase heat, add more Sriracha sauce.
- If you can’t find Sriracha sauce, chili sauce can be used instead.
- Lowfat or nonfat yogurt can be used instead of lowfat sour cream, but the dip will have a thinner consistency.
