Letter from the Editor

Dear ABCDlady Readers,

I was fortunate to go sailing for the first time a couple weeks ago. Amazingly, I was able to forget all the extraneous things I worry about and simply focus on the sun, water and people around me. Sometimes you have moments you just know are going to stick with you. That day, it’s as though someone took a photo of what was going on in my head—I know I can summon up my memories of the blue sky, steady breeze and that care-free feeling any time. It sometimes takes getting away to get back to the basics. This month, we get back to the basics in ABCDlady’s May issue. We focus on marriage, loved ones and also India’s election season.

First, we bring you a feature on the ABCD generation’s use of Shaadi.com. This feature is part one of three and delves into whether the website could be the modern day matchmaker. We also meet the writer of this piece and go behind the scenes with her as she wrote this article, from creating her profile on Shaadi.com to her own personal reasons for pursuing this topic.

It seems like it’s a big deal in South Asian culture for a younger sister to get married before the older one. This month, our Love and Sex expert addresses this issue, in addition to sorting through a manager/subordinate relationship at work.

With good weather on its way, what better time is there to sit both your parents down and reflect on their exercise habits? This month, we discuss creative ways to get your parents to exercise.

In honor of Mother’s Day, our cuisine expert gives us two hand-me-down recipes from her mother and mother-in-law. Hand-me-down recipes are always the best ones!

For our parent readers, we bring you a special piece on parenting styles. Are you a helicopter parent or the hands-off type? Read on to learn more!

Exasperated with your hair due to the increased heat and humidity? Our Desi Diva gives you a special summer guide on hair care.

The season finales of our favorite shows are around the corner. Have you been wondering about that Indian guy you keep seeing on 30 Rock and Weeds? So were we, so we sent a search party out to hunt down Maulik Pancholy to bring him to you. Find out Pancholy’s thoughts on who would win a boxing match between his character Jonathan and Kenneth—and much more!

With India’s election season in its third phase, many new ad campaigns have sprouted, combining the message to vote along with corporation branding. This month, we discuss the effect of India’s ad campaign on getting the youth out to vote.

And stay tuned—ABCDlady is getting a makeover! Look out for some changes in the upcoming months!

Sincerely,

Navdeep Kathuria
