Dear ABCDlady Readers,

Looking back at the last decade, South Asians have made a significant name for themselves in America. Indra Nooyi became CEO of Pepsi, Bobby Jindal became the first Indian to be elected governor of an American state and Vikram Pandit became CEO of Citigroup, to name a few. But in addition to the thousands of accomplished South Asians, we have also had a larger and perhaps less obvious impact. Chai, originating in India, is now a staple at Starbucks. Henna tattoos, yoga and South Asian music have made their way into American mainstream. South Asian countries have been the leaders in outsourcing.

Along with the positive, like all ethnic groups, we’ve faced our share of tribulations. After 9-11, hate crimes were directed at Sikhs, Muslims and anyone who fit the terrorist stereotype. South Asian children in Queens, New York experienced brutal attacks, simply because they looked different. In the second half of the decade, burglaries targeting gold in South Asian homes sprouted up in Houston, the Silicon Valley, Northern Virginia and Toronto.

Despite the setbacks we’ve faced, South Asians have countless accomplishments of which to be proud. This month, we’d like to celebrate those accomplishments, starting off with this year’s Desis of 2009 list – a celebration of the top ten Desis who have had an impact on the world around them. Next, we meet Rez Abbassi, an intellectual making a mark in the jazz community. When you get into his head, as our interviewer does, you can almost discern how his brilliant music comes to light.

Worried about taking your non-Indian spouse to India with you as you plan trips for the new year? Our From Confused to Confident writers were too, and the couple jointly writes about their experiences. This is a must-read for anyone who knows a mixed-heritage couple!

If the frigid temperatures or snow are keeping your children indoors and giving them cabin fever, try our Parenting Expert’s ten winter boredom busters. From dancing in the living room to laundry slam dunks, you’ll transform your home into a playground.

When you make New Year’s resolutions at the end of a decade, are your resolutions any different than if it were any other year? This month, we decided to hit one of the biggies—the resolution to eat healthy. First, we give you a Cauliflower Soup recipe. Cauliflower is rich in vitamins, potassium, folate and dietary fiber—what’s not to love!

Next, we talk about mindful eating—a method that entails paying attention to the food you’re eating and your level of hunger. You’ll be surprised what you could learn about yourself.

This month, we also have a special for our male readers—a grooming guide. If you’re already saying to yourself, “But I don’t need a guide on grooming,” our Desi Diva especially wants you to read this one.

Finally, our Love and Sex experts chat about men intimidated by a woman’s success and obsessive blackberry-aholics.

Here’s to the new year and decade. I am certain that Desis all around the world will continue to amaze us.

Sincerely,

Navdeep Kathuria
